A self-taught artist/painter/amateur photographer living on the coast of Maine, Laurie works full time as a trauma- informed behavior specialist technician in a special-purpose school.
Laurie also enjoys IDing wildlife, plants, and fungus, and nature journaling.
You might also catch her foraging, cooking, Lindy Hop dancing, and attending art events in the community.
Laurie likes to play with many different mediums, and genres. Her tendency is toward expressionist landscapes, botanical subjects, and abstracts.
Primarily she is painting in oils, but also works with pastels, collage and encaustics. She is new at watercolor, but does a fair-to-middlin' illustration with water-based mediums.
Though an amateur, Laurie has taken thousands of photographs, and does any photoshop herself. Digital enhancements and collage-making are fun and you can see some of that here.
finding one or two mediums or genres would be limiting to the need for exploration, so there is a lot of experimenting; much of this is for learning's sake, and of course, just for the fun of it! It's not all fun and games though; The critical thinking involved in art-making is very satisfying to her.
"The natural world always struck the creative chord in me. I was brought up on a self sufficient homestead in rural Pennsylvania where I often roamed forests and meadows miles from town. My childhood is a rich source of inspiration.
After moving around a lot, I'm now exploring land, sea and city-scapes that Maine offers.
I'm no stranger to change, in fact a need for change may be what drives me most. There's really been no focus on developing a distinctive style, which has probably hindered any commercial success, but that was never my concern. By doing a volume of work in recent years, 'd say a particular style is coming about, especially with my palette; It isn't limited, but Prussian blue, Alizarin Crimson and Pthalo Green feature hard; They're colors Mother Nature uses when she wants to show off!"
